Yoga. Unique to every individual and more than just flexibility

Yoga Class Hobart The Studio

With Yoga now being offered at The Studio in South Hobart, we take a closer look at this ancient practice and how it can benefit you.

One of the oldest forms of exercise still being practised today is Yoga. Centuries ago it was a prominent Eastern practice, but over time it has become widely accepted in the Western world and is now one of the fastest growing fitness methods globally.

Yoga is a union of your mind-body and soul.  Traditional practice combines the eight limbs of yoga – yamas (restraints), niyamas (observances), asana (postures), pranayama (breathing), pratyahara (withdrawal of senses), Dharana (concentration), dhyani (meditation).

At The Studio we focus on the asana limb, or the postures of Yoga. These physical postures used in many combinations strengthen, lengthen, and align your muscles, tissues, and bones. They are all highly focused on opening the spine so that it can move freely.

The yoga philosophy is designed to improve your mind-body awareness – commonly called mindfulness. In the Western world it has become a healing, balancing, and physical exercise method.

Yoga Misconception (Yoga, more than just flexibility)

Yoga is often misconceived as being solely a flexibility practice.  This is far from the truth. It is more than physical postures that stretch the muscles. The unique quality that yoga has is that it connects the movements of your body with the fluctuations of your mind and the rhythm of your breath.

Each movement from one posture to the next challenges your musculoskeletal, neural, and fascial systems. Yoga is about creating a physical and mental stability throughout your body.

The process of connecting your breath to each movement helps direct your attention inward. It is here that you will learn to recognise your habitual thoughts without judgement and ultimately become more aware of your experiences and abilities.

Your body and mind will become more flexible with the addition of yoga to your regular fitness practice.

Who should practise yoga?

Yoga is a personal experience. Although you may be practicing Yoga in a group class, your experience is unique to you.

One of the best things is that it can be practised by anyone, anywhere. People of all ages, gender, and physical limitations can practise Yoga.  Those of all experience levels including avid Yogis, corporate professionals, athletes, Hollywood A-listers, grandparents, parents, young adults, and  even primary school children can all benefit from regular Yoga.

Not only will Yoga improve your strength, balance, flexibility, concentration, and focus, it will also help you control many other health ailments such as:

  • poor circulation
  • high blood pressure
  • arthritis
  • low back pain
  • neck pain
  • headaches
  • stress and tension
  • depression
  • osteoporosis
  • breathing difficulties

A regular practise of yoga can also help reduce your risk of injury. Each posture targets a specific muscle or muscle group.  As you increase the flexibility of these muscles, you will reduce your risk for injury.

The Studio has Hobart’s newest and most stunning Yoga offering

There are many styles of yoga practised all over the world.  At The Studio, we offer Vinyasa classes.  These classes focus on combining postures and breath-work while the tempo is increased.

Vinyasa yoga is about flowing from one movement to the next.  Each posture is connected to the next. It is one of the most popular styles of yoga for athletes, runners, and others who want to live a fit and healthy lifestyle – it is more active or dynamic in nature than other forms of Yoga.

Originally developed in the 20th century, vinyasa is a free-form style of Yoga. Thus, it allows for wider creativity and exploration.  Each vinyasa Yoga class may differ from the next because of its wide range of sequences.

We offer vinyasa Yoga because of its variety and its ability to provide you the tools you need to quiet your mind. You will greatly improve your balance, enhance your spinal mobility, improve muscle strength, and create a greater mental awareness.

Limited class sizes to ensure quality instruction and attention for all

At The Studio we want to ensure you have a high-quality experience that helps you achieve your goals. We have limited class sizes so that you have the best instruction to complete each of your postures.

When practising Yoga, it is important that you use proper positioning to avoid injury. Our highly qualified instructors teach you how to effectively complete each posture and flow. As you progress in your ability, the classes will continue to challenge your fitness level and instructors will offer progressions to further develop your practice.

One of the greatest things about Yoga, is that there is not a right or wrong way to practice – you do not have to be perfect to move to the next level.

We provide everything you need to tune out and focus on yourself.  You will work at your own level during each class and leave feeling stronger, fitter, more flexible, and recharged and you’ll come back to continue to challenge yourself and find improvement along the journey.
